About Termika
Termika is a free paragliding forecast tool covering 12,333 flying sites across the Americas and Europe. It was built by a paragliding pilot who got tired of checking five different weather apps before every flight.
How the thermal score works
Every site gets a composite score from 0 to 100, updated daily. The score combines six key factors that determine whether a day is good for cross-country (XC) flying:
- Thermal density โ how many thermal hotspots exist near the site
- Wind speed and direction โ light, launchable wind vs dangerous gusts
- Cloud base height โ higher base = more vertical development
- CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) โ thermal energy in the atmosphere
- Lifted Index โ atmospheric instability indicator
- Precipitation probability โ rain kills thermals
A score above 70 means excellent XC conditions. 50โ70 is good for local soaring. Below 50 is marginal โ stay on the ground or expect short flights.
Data sources
Termika aggregates data from trusted open sources:
- Open-Meteo โ weather forecasts (open data)
- ParaglidingEarth โ site database (CC-BY-4.0)
- thermal.kk7.ch โ thermal hotspot maps (CC-BY-NC-SA)
- OpenStreetMap โ map tiles
Safety disclaimer
Termika is a decision aid, not flight clearance. Forecasts are model-based estimates that can be wrong. Always check conditions on the ground before launching, consult local pilots, and never fly beyond your skill level.
